3G能將無線通訊與網際網路等多媒體通訊結合的新一代行動通訊系統。能夠處理影像、音樂、視訊形式，提供網頁瀏覽、電話會議、電子商務資訊服務。無線網路必須能夠支援不同的資料傳輸速度，也就是說在室內、室外和行車的環境中能夠分別支援至少2Mbps、384kbps以及144kbps的傳輸速度。由於採用了更高的頻帶和更先進的無線（空中介面）接入技術，3G標準的流動通訊網路通訊品質較2G、2.5G網路有了很大提高，比如軟切換技術使得旅途中高速運動的移動使用者在駛出一個無線小區並進入另一個無線小區時不再出現掉話現象。而更高的頻帶範圍和 使用者分級規則使得單位區域內的網路容量大大提高，同時通話允許量大大增加。
3G最大的優點即是高速的資料下載能力。相對於2.5G（GPRS/CDMA1x）100kbps左右的速度，3G隨使用環境的不同約有300k-2Mbps左右的水準。
另外有些3G系統服務業者會更新為3.5G系統（如HSDPA），此時可有下傳14Mbps、上傳5.8Mbps的速度。
