歷經10任總統，白宮資深記者海倫‧湯瑪斯（Helen Thomas）以92歲高齡辭世，她採訪咄咄逼人的態度將永遠受人景仰與懷念。
湯瑪斯出生於肯塔基州一個黎巴嫩移民家庭，高中時期參與學生報工作，從此立志成為記者。偉恩大學（Wayne University）（現為「偉恩州立大學」）畢業之後，先在《華盛頓每日新聞》（Washington Daily News）當小妹，1943年進入合眾國際社的前身「合眾社」（United Press）。
1974年她獲合眾國際社（United Press International）派任為白宮特派，成為美國史上首位通訊社駐白宮女特派員。擔任特派期間，她也是頭一批跑白宮「女性路線」的女記者，負責報導總統的小孩、夫人、茶會與髮型等輕鬆新聞之外，對於硬邦邦新聞的掌握也不遜男性同業。
湯瑪斯對提問的堅持，簡直到了窮追猛打的地步，一名白宮新聞秘書曾形容，湯瑪斯提問就像「拷問」；她長年坐在記者席前排，將10位總統拷問到無地自容，而有合眾國際社「鬥牛犬」之稱。
除了採訪強勢之外，湯瑪斯也毫不掩飾她對於以色列與猶太人的敵視。2010年網路流傳的影片中，她大罵以色列應該「滾出巴勒斯坦」，「回到」德國、波蘭、或美國，這番發言導致廣泛批評，最終讓她丟掉工作。
之後，她轉任專欄作家，值到辭世。歐巴馬總統聽聞湯瑪斯的過世，讚揚她為女性新聞工作者開創新局面
