美國爾灣加州大學社會心理學家皮福發現，有錢人通常比較自我中心，相對吝嗇且容易違法，較不富裕的人反而能體諒別人，因而相對較慷慨又守法。

英國廣播公司（ＢＢＣ）報導，皮福研究將近十年，發現富有不會讓人變得樂善好施，反而「讓你更重視自己的利益、慾望和幸福，財富在心理和物質上把你和其他人隔絕開來，你會認為自己的需求和目標最重要，比較不重視旁人的需要」。

皮福在洛杉磯的海濱道路作實驗，這裡充斥開四輪驅動車、跑車和油電車等昂貴車款的有錢人，測試方式是看駕駛會不會遵守交通規則，行經斑馬線時主動停車讓行人優先過馬路，皮福說：「便宜車款的駕駛沒有人違規，那些最貴車款的駕駛將近一半違規。」
